Outdoor Garden Furniture

Decks and patios frequently have cedar garden furniture, materials that are composed of the popular North American hardwood cedar. The precise type of wood involved is typically a clear grade western red cedar. Only if a piece of garden furniture can adequately thrive in conditions brought on by sun and rain should the garden furniture be purchased. For many living in the northern most part of the United States, a real consideration that has to be taken into account when buying garden furniture is whether or not it can stand up to the snow, sleet, and hail.

For many, western red cedar, and its natural preservatives against rot and decay make it a perfect solution. Many people across the United States went crazy for the Adirondack Chair when it premiered because it was the first such piece of furniture to come out of this wood. The government, upon seeing the durability of this type of inexpensive wood, decided to use cedar benches in parks. The depression era brought forth the creation of many of these benches by people who worked on the WPA. This era, which caused much unemployment throughout the nation, saw the formation of the WPA, as President Roosevelt designed it to give jobs to the unemployed. The work program that was designed to help ease the unemployment in the nation resulted in many cedar trees being cut down and made into furniture - one such popular design was the park benches used by the federal government.

Many cedar chests were also made as they kept things very well and prevent mold and mildew from destroying the chest and its contents. This feature was especially preferred by sailors who used the chests at sea. Also during this time period, funeral directors began using cedar and pine to build coffins. Doctors hailing from England were proponents of using cedar coffins to bury the dead because they believed it would halt the spread of disease. Over the years, cedar's versatility has allowed it to be used for many reasons.

Today we find that cedar garden furniture is a beautiful to anyone's patio or his or her home. A beautiful cedar patio set accents any persons home and the elite of America often request their patio and garden be inlaid with cedar. Many people are able to find items like serving trays and carts, and other accessories that are made from cedar as well with the stores Wal-Mart and Argos garden furniture store being good places to find such items. For affordable prices, cedar garden furniture can be purchased from most department stores with Sears and J.C.Pennies being two examples of this. Many beautiful pieces can be purchased online through The Cedar Outdoor Furniture Company. A particular benefit of dealing with The Cedar Outdoor Furniture Company is they will also make furniture pieces to your specific requirements.

To match your furniture, The Cedar Outdoor Furniture Company sells many outdoor furniture accessories. The company has great pride in the way they manufacture their cedar garden furniture. Two additional reasons to shop at this company include the fact that all their items are uniquely finely sanded and handcrafted.

How to Identify 20th Century Furniture

So you stumble upon your families old furniture and have no idea of the worth or age.  Chances are it is manufactured furniture and a bit of detective work will help to confirm your hunches.

Sears and Roebuck sold furniture around the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries.  Much of this assembly line furniture is even revered today as “antique.”  It does meet the most commonly accepted definition for an antique, but you must still measure construction techniques and quality.

Names like Biggs and Nutting have long been recognized and respected for their methods of reproducing period furniture.  It is important to recognize names of the furniture manufacturers proud enough of their product to brand, mark the pieces with a decal or place a medallion on the piece attesting to their quality.

In the last half of the 19th century and the first half of the 20th century, many furniture manufacturers were located near the Grand Rapids, Michigan area.  The furniture industry worked hard to counteract any negative image of factory made furniture.  Designers and skilled craftsmen were hired.  Furniture was often mahogany and well marked.

Over the last ten or so years, information on many furniture manufacturing companies has been compiled.  You may find their method of marking on the left side of the interior of the top left hand drawer or on the back of a piece of furniture.  Get out your flashlight as you might be lucky enough to find a faint pencil signature on the inside back of a piece of case furniture.

Start looking for marks on your older furniture.  Some decals or marks may not be complete but with a little sleuthing you just might come up with the name of the manufacturer.  Documenting your furniture’s manufacturer is interesting and can add to the overall value of the piece.

Store Your Wine In Style With An Oak Wine Rack

Oak Wine Rack

When you are storing wine, you are going to want to use something that is not only sleek and stylish, but something that will allow your wine to be stored in the correct manner. By using an oak wine rack, this can fulfill both of the requirements and allow you to drink wine that tastes great all of the time. The other important factor to remember is that your oak wine rack should be in a place where the wine will be stored at the right temperature. This should be a room in your home with a moderate temperature. Cool areas like cellars are good, but as long as your wine doesn't get too hot or too cold, it should be fine.

A handmade oak wine rack made of semi-seasoned wood may face many changes.  Since the drying out process is still occurring, cracking and splitting may alter the look of the wine rack.  Color changes of the wine rack are also subject to take place. The homemade oak wine rack comes in various shapes and sizes.  The shapes run from simple to extravagant  and everything in between.  However, if the particular shape and size of wine rack is not found an individual can find a manufacturer to customize the perfect wine rack they are looking for.

Pine Wine Rack

Why Is The Pine Wine Rack So Popular?  One of the major advantages of the pine wine rack is its cost effectiveness. You will find that the cost of this type of rack is relatively the lowest among all the wine racks available in the market. In fact you would be able to get a great looking piece for just about US $100 that could accommodate some 48 bottles of wine. Of course, you could add or remove as many openings as you find necessary later on.

The first thing that rules in favor of the pine wine rack is its versatility. This type of rack can be small enough to accommodate only four bottles or large enough to accommodate 120 bottles. It is usually possible to assemble or dissemble the openings of a pine wine rack in order to have the exact size that is needed for the occasion.

The pine wine rack is also considered to be the strongest among wooden racks. This explains why this rack can be used to store hundreds of wine bottles in one stand without any fear of collapse or compression. Though this would be okay as a table top wine rack, it would look and function best when mounted on a wall. Not many people can have cellars constructed in their homes for wine storage. Therefore, other methods are adopted according to individual preference, convenience and budget. There are many types and designs of wine racks in the market, however most people seem to prefer the pine wine rack to the others.

Should I Refinish or Not?

Should an older piece of furniture be refinished or left with its original finish?  Would refinishing result in a significant loss of value?

Speaking as the owner of a furniture refurbishing shop, I am amazed at how brain washed the public has become when it comes to the question of whether or not to refinish furniture.  Thanks in part to shows like the Antiques Roadshow, people are generally afraid to refinish any piece of furniture that remotely has some age on it.

In America, there are different standards regarding refurbishing depending on the type of merchandise.  Many people feel it is taboo to refinish antique furniture regardless of how awful the piece may look because of a possible negative impact on value.  But, you can take an antique car and tear it down to the bare bones, strip it, sand it and fill it full of new old stock replacement parts and it only enhances the value of the car.

If you are thinking of refinishing, it is probably because the piece of furniture in question is not very attractive and there are finish problems.  Think about what you paid for a piece and how you want to use it.  Most folks want to enjoy a piece of furniture in the most attractive way possible in their homes.  They would rather have a good looking piece of furniture in their house than a piece that looks like it only belongs in a museum.

Generally, factory, assembly-line furniture made in the late 19th and 20th centuries can safely be refinished without value being affected.

There are times that you do need to have a professional give you an opinion about whether or not to refinish.  If a piece predates 1850 and reflects the maker’s art, you should seek guidance before refinishing.  This is also true of most antique painted furniture.  Painted furniture from the 19th century may have value tied up in the painting.  This may be true of painted and/or stenciled furniture that really does not look very good at all.

Remember, an older piece of furniture may have already had repairs and restoration to the finish.   Furniture refinished in the 19th century may well have a nice patina making it difficult to determine if the finish is original.  When in doubt, ask the opinion of a professional in the restoration field.

Choosing The Best Bedroom Furniture

For a bedroom to look very well, it has got to be furnished .The furnishing will depend a great deal on your taste and the quality of bedroom furniture you want  to use. It also depends on your financial power and your environment. What's important however is to give your bedroom a very unique look - this is very possible with the right bedroom furniture.

For you to design any type of bedroom, you must look out for new ideas. This you will get from magazines and also from the internet. Try not to depend on only your basic knowledge. Let your vision guide you and try to acquire more knowledge from other venus as you can. All of these will end up turning your bedroom into a little paradise.

There are different types of rugs to use in beautifying your bedroom. We have the hand made rugs, the contemporary ones, the designer rugs, the specially designed rugs for children. We also have the modern tufted rugs. The rugs come in various sizes and shapes. You may decise to carpet the entire house or a portion of it. Rugs can be rectangular or circular, some come in oval shapes. They can range from inexpensive to very costly. This depends on the fabrics used. It also depends on if the carpet is hand made or machine made.

As you choose the colors for your bedroom furniture, it's important be conscious of what we call color wheels and the rules that go with them. Rule number one says colors in the same family always go together. A color red that you choose should definitely go with other types of red. This is also named the monochromatic system.

It's not unusual to find many different kinds of bedroom furniture. You can find the unusual ones and many conventioanl ones. The one you will pick should be dependent on your preference and how it will fit in your bedroom.

Have you ever enjoyed the beauty of antique white bedroom furniture? If not, then you are missing a great deal. The universal appeal that antique white bedroom furniture has is because it has the tendency to brighten up any bedroom - no matter how dingy or dark that bedroom is. Try it and you will be stunned at the amazing beauty and uniqueness.

Lots of my friends say they now use bamboo bedroom furniture to add comfort, style and texture to their bedrooms. Because of the fact that bamboo is both lightweight and durable, many see it as environmentally friendly material for building. Some of the bamboo bedroom furniture that many people use these days include bamboo picture frames, bamboo bed frames, bamboo headboards, bamboo nightstands, etc.

Even though one might want to spend less on bedroom furniture, it's important not to sacrifice quality or beauty because you want to save costs. If you can't afford to decorate your bedroom the way you truly want to, then postpone the decoration until when you can afford it. It's much better to do things right the first time around.

Furnished or Unfurnished?

Renters will often be faced with the decision of whether to opt for a furnished apartment or an unfurnished apartment. The majority of apartments available for rent are likely to be unfurnished apartments but there are some apartments which are available with furnishings. There are some situations in which it makes sense to choose a furnished apartment. Likewise there are situations in which a furnished apartment is not a good idea. This article will discuss these situations in an effort to assist the reader in determining whether or not it is better to rent a furnished apartment or an unfurnished apartment.

What Does Furnished Mean?

A furnished apartment may mean different things to different people. Some renters may expect a furnished apartment to have each and every room completely furnished with every possible piece of furniture. Typical furnishings may include a bed, a dresser, nightstands, alarm clock with built in radio, a television, stereo equipment, DVD player, an entertainment center, couch, coffee table, end tables, kitchen table and kitchen chairs. It may also include dining room furniture such as a dining room table, chairs and a curial cabinet. Others may assume a furnished apartment includes only the necessary furnishings such as a bed, couch, kitchen table and chairs. This essentially eliminates all electrical equipment as well as furniture deemed to be decorative in nature such as a coffee table, end tables or nightstands.

When is a Furnished Apartment a Good Idea?

A furnished apartment is a good idea for recent college graduates who lived on campus in a dorm room prior to graduation. These students likely have very little furniture of their own. In this case, renting a furnished apartment may be more economical than purchasing enough furniture to live comfortably in the apartment.

The overall cost of a furnished apartment may be higher in the long run because the renter may pay more but those who are unable to pay a great deal of money upfront to furnish an apartment might not mind paying this additional amount. For these renters, they are not likely to notice the impact of a slightly higher monthly rent payment but they would definitely feel the impact of significant purchases such as a bed, couch or dining room set.

When is an Unfurnished Apartment a Good Idea?

There are certain situations in which an unfurnished apartment is a good idea. This includes a situation where the renter has already accumulated enough furniture to furnish the entire apartment. In this case, selecting a furnished apartment would not make sense because the renter would have to find a location to store either his own furniture or the furniture supplied by the apartment complex. The cost of storage can add up very quickly. Additionally, the renter probably pays a higher rent to stay in a furnished apartment.

An unfurnished apartment is also a good idea when the renter currently does not have any furniture but is looking forward to purchasing furniture and has already saved up enough money to make these purchases. In this situation the renter will likely select an unfurnished apartment and plan on shopping for furniture almost immediately after taking possession of the rental property.

Storing Extra Furniture

Renters who opt for a fully furnished apartment when they already have a sufficient amount of furniture have to determine what they will do with their furniture while they are staying in the rental apartment. The options are basically as follows:

* Sell or give away all currently owned furniture
* Store your own furniture
* Store the furniture which comes with the apartment

While each of the above options is certainly valid, the renter should seriously consider whether or not they want to pay additional storage fees just to rent a furnished apartment. Renters who plan to sell or donate their current furniture do not face this dilemma but those who plan to store one set of furniture should carefully consider the price of storage. They should also consult with the leasing agent to determine if there are any contract items which prohibit placing furniture owned by the apartment complex in an offsite storage facility. There may be provisions which allow for these items to be stored but require them to be stored onsite.
